Tuesday, Day 2 at th @luderitzspeedchallenge turned out to be a windyyyyy one !
Like everyone else, I've seen all the videos and pictures from previous years and knew what to expect, but when it comes - its still something to behold. Kind of like a wall of raw power that just arrives out of the desert and hits you like a baseball bat in the back of the head. Sand flying, stones flying, the type wind I've been trying to find for years, and match it to flat water. It's often as windy as this in Ireland, but it always seems it's when the tide is wrong, the direction is wrong for speed, or it's dark. You can spend your life searching for conditions like this (I have), so it was a real dream come true to be on the best speed course in the world in 45knots plus wind, with the best speedsailors in the world. Game on!
The big guys (@100kg without lead) of course were straight on it, and soon started flying into the 50s.
I got in a few good runs, while also watching and learned as much as I could. It was only my second day here and I've been sick for a week, so just worked on what I know, and trying out what boards work (or don't). Also dragged out my old 4.7 evo 2 to make sure I could get down the course and get a feel for it. In the end started to push it a bit and worked more on the starts, which are the most important thing. Last week @vincentbel62 hit the start line at 53knots already!
Just heard today from official results that I managed to up the Irish record again to 46.21 over 500m (subject to ratiftcation by WSSRC), but I know that I've still a lot of work and learning to do, and there is plenty more to come.
Next big wind should be next week. For now it's rest and finally recharge the body, tune the gear more and get ready.
Todays video is a 360 clip taken earlier in the day, on 5.2m and 38 wide board, before it got proper windy.
Stay tuned on luderitz-speed.com for all the live updates.
